For the first time since 2013, Katy Perry has a new song out, perfectly timed to Rio’s Summer Olympics. The anthemic “Rise” will be used by NBC during the opening ceremony on August 5 and throughout the network’s coverage of the games.
The song itself is pretty much what you’d expect—inspirational, victorious, etc.—and include lyrics like “When the fire’s at my feet again/And the vultures all start circling/They’re whispering, ‘you’re out of time’/ But still I rise” (not unlike Maya Angelou’s famous poem “Still I Rise.”
In a statement for NBC, Katy says “Rise” is not just something she wrote for the Olympics, but a piece that’s been in her for a while. “This is a song that’s been brewing inside me for years, that has finally come to the surface. I was inspired to finish it now, rather than save it for my next album, because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite,” she said. “I know that together we can rise above the fear – in our country, and around the world. I can’t think of a better example than the Olympic athletes, as they gather in Rio with their strength and fearlessness, to remind us how we ALL can come together, with the resolve to be the best we can be.”
The whole song is available on iTunes, and check out the official video below
